Kurikoan
横浜くりこ庵 大塚店
Located inside the building directly connected to Otsuka Station, Kurikoan serves hefty taiyaki filled with sweet ogura red bean paste, vanilla bean custard, and a Toden Arakawa Line tram design.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The first thing you notice when picking up a taiyaki from Yokohama Kurikoan is its reassuring heft and thick, fluffy bake. Quite different from thin, crispy-crust styles, the batter here eats more like a tender pancake or waffle—plump, springy, and substantial, with a fragrant roasted crust and gentle sweetness that fills the mouth.
The classic ogura red bean paste leaves the texture of whole azuki beans pleasantly intact, balancing its restrained sweetness from the fish's head all the way to the tip of the tail. For the custard cream, vanilla beans lend a mellow richness and silky texture that match the generous pastry wonderfully.
Unique to the Otsuka branch is the Densha-yaki, shaped after the local Toden Arakawa Line tram cars. Tucked inside the adorable tram silhouette is smooth koshian dotted generously with chopped chestnuts, making it an appealing souvenir gift as well as a fun treat. The counter also turns out an array of other flavors, ranging from seasonal Japanese fillings to savory snack options such as tuna salad and sausage.
For takeout, reheating the pastry briefly in the microwave and then crisping the exterior in a toaster oven revives that freshly baked texture—crisp outside and pillowy inside. Situated on the 1st floor of the Atre shopping complex directly connected to Otsuka Station, it is an easy pit stop between trains or after shopping, and cashless payment options such as PayPay are accepted.
